Kirk Duane Snyder Obituary

Kirk Duane Snyder of Nuevo Arenal, Costa Rica passed away January 3, 2021 at a hospital in Liberia, Costa Rica. Kirk was born October 22, 1946 in Anthony, Kansas to Marlyn Snyder and Lucille Zimmerman Snyder.

Kirk, a former Boy Scout, graduated from Anthony High School in 1964. During his time there, Kirk was very active in extracurricular activities playing both football and tennis along with participating in band as a drum major. A close high school friend tells a story of how at half-time Kirk would quickly change out of his football uniform and into his band uniform to lead the marching band. Following graduation, he first enrolled in Hutchinson Jr. College in Hutchinson, KS and finished earning his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, OK in 1968. After college, he served with the U.S. Navy as an Operator on P3 airplanes with Patrol Squadron 44. Stationed in the Azores with details to Torrejon, Spain, Kirk frequently shared fond memories of his time in the Navy. Finishing his time in the Northeastern United States, Kirk was honorably discharged November of 1972. In September of 1971 Kirk married Donna Hoffses Mosher of Falmouth, Maine in a ceremony in her hometown.  In the spring of 1973, Kirk and Donna moved to Pueblo, Colorado where Kirk served as Bank Manager at Otero Savings and Loan. They moved to La Junta, Colorado in 1976 where Kirk continued his employment with Otero Savings and Loan. In June 1985, Kirk married his second wife, Janice Veirs of Swink, Colorado; and the family lived in La Junta until Otero Savings and Loan closed. They then moved to Pueblo, CO with Kirk commuting to Colorado Springs, CO where he worked for the Resolution Trust Corporation. In 1990, Kirk and Janice returned to Rocky Ford-Swink area where Kirk accepted a position as Human Resources/Support Services Director at the Colorado Boys Ranch. Prior to his HR leadership position, Kirk served on the board of directors. Following the unfortunate death of his second wife Janice, Kirk married Cindy Bunting of La Junta, Colorado in July 1996. In 2014, Kirk retired to Nuevo Arenal Costa Rica where he lived out the later years of his life in paradise with his many friends there.

Always one to help out the community, Kirk served on the La Junta Chamber of Commerce for several years and as president in 1981, the Mavericks Club, The Colorado Boys Ranch Board, Co-hosted Wake Up La Junta Breakfast in his red long underwear and cowboy boots, volunteered with Jay’s Christmas Dinner, supported local sports and helped guide in the annual celebrity dove hunt. While in Costa Rica, Kirk supported Saving Hearts Together, Homeless and Helpless animal rescue, and numerous families in need. An avid outdoorsman, Kirk enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating or just being in the outdoors of the Colorado mountains any chance that he got. Additionally, he loved cooking, playing guitar or banjo, telling overly embellished stories and traveling. If you were lucky to have known him, you would know that Kirk was caring, a prankster with a contagious laugh and took pride in winning the first-place trophy in a liar’s storytelling competition. A long-time childhood friend said it best, “I hope the good lord is ready for Kirk, because there is no other like him.”

Kirk is survived by his children Julie Snyder Rivero of Parker, Colorado; Jason Aragon of Lakewood, Colorado; Eric Aragon of Avon, Colorado; Amber Kreft of La Junta, Colorado; Caroline Finkner of La Junta, Colorado; grandchildren Gabby Rivero of Parker, Colorado; Louisa Aragon of Avon, Colorado; Skylar and Weston Finkner of La Junta, Colorado; Isabella Torres Marchena, daughter of close friends and caretakers Fernando Carvajal and Keisy Marchena; Brother-in-law and sister-in-law Rick and Gloria Thomas of Swink, Colorado, numerous nieces and nephews, and his best companion, Graysee.

Due to the current pandemic, the family will be holding services at a later time. Memorial donations can be made in Kirk’s name to the following charities:
