La Junta KOA Brought Home Their Latest Project

La Junta KOA owner, Brad Patterson Plans Large Project

This is not the first major project for the Patterson's at KOA of La Junta. Their facilities have been steadily improved and refurbished. From the restoration of the swimming pool, and replacement of the playground equipment to major improvements like the addition of new cabins and the Daily Planet Drive-Thru coffee, shave ice and treat stand.

Patterson admitted that he's had his eye on Ronald's Caboose at the local McDonald's since he moved to town. After some major research and effort the local caboose has been relocated. The better part of Monday was spent completing the move.

He further explained that this wasn't an impulse purchase. Patterson said there was a period of price negotiations, but ultimately he was, "pleased with the price."

He went on to explain the benefits of buying local. Transportation costs were kept down since the caboose was only a mile away. Patterson described the national market for train cars was active, he said lots of these are sold and shipped by rail across the country. This one was actually located closer than the local train station.

Prior to being painted clown colors Ronald's Caboose was dark red. Patterson said the side facing east would be painted the same red, while the west side will be painted orange and grey, in a traditional Santa Fe paint scheme.

The interior is going to be refurbished much like a cabin even including a bathroom and viewing area. Patterson said it was a challenge to get the plumbing installed due to the usual location issues (old unmarked abandoned lines).

A crane far beyond the usual heavy equipment rental was needed for this big of a job. Patterson said the crane owner said the crane's max lift capacity was 600,000 lbs. He asked what it was used for and the answer was lifting oil rig equipment.

After refurbishment, travelers and locals alike can enjoy a historic railway sleep over in La Junta.

Patterson said he plans to add a sky dome railcar next, so visitors can sleep under the stars while they stay at KOA of La Junta.
