Suspect Apprehended in High Speed Chase

In the early morning hours of 8/29/2022, a Deputy with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Javier Alvarez. Alvarez fled in his vehicle from multiple members of the Lincoln County Sheriff's

Office and the Hugo Marshal's Office. Members of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office observed Alvarez throwing items out of his window, which were suspected to be illicit narcotics.

The pursuit headed eastbound into Kit Carson County with speeds routinely reaching 115+ MPH. Members of the Kit Carson County Sheriff's Office were able to successfully deploy stop sticks near the 418 milepost. Colorado State Patrol assisted in closing the off-ramp to Stratton.

Alvarez continued to drive eastbound on I-70, even though his front left tire was flat. Eventually, the tire, wheel, and brake rotor were so badly damaged that Alvarez was driving on the frame of his vehicle while still reaching speeds of 90- 100 MPH.

Alvarez exited into Burlington at the 437 milepost, where the lead car of the pursuit, a member of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, was involved in a crash which caused severe damage to his patrol vehicle. Fortunately, the law enforcement officer was unharmed. Alvarez continued fleeing northbound on

Lincoln Street before exiting from his vehicle on foot near the intersection of Lincoln Street and Senter Avenue.

Alvarez was taken into custody a short time later by multiple members of law enforcement and had suspected cocaine on his person.

*All defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty in court.
