LJPD Make Arrest After Late Night Chase

One Hour Chase Leads to Arrest

On October 21, 2022 at 12:01 am officers with the La Junta Police Department attempted to contact a white and grey Chevy Tahoe for a traffic infraction. 

The vehicle failed to stop and LJPD officers pursued in town for 12 minutes.

La Junta Police Officers discontinued pursuit at 12:13 am. as the vehicle left their jurisdiction.

Otero County Sheriffs deputies continued pursuit on Hwy 109 between La Junta and Cheraw.

Otero County Sheriffs deputies stopped pursuit, but followed suspect vehicle.

Otero Sheriff requested stop sticks be deployed at Hwy 109 in North La Junta, LJPD deployed stop sticks at 12:28 am, which were successful.

La Junta officers continued pursuit of the vehicle while it drove on blown tires and bare rims.

The pursuit covered many streets and alleyways including Adams Ave., Raton Ave., through La Junta City Park, San Juan Ave., Steen Ave., Smithland Ave., Cimarron Ave., Lewis Ave., Grace Ave., Harriet Ave., through many side streets and even going the wrong way on US Hwy 50.

The vehicle stopped at 12:59 due to wheel and rim breaking at the 500 Block of Bradish Ave.

La Junta Police officers arrested the driver, 31 year old Danae Marie Rangal.

Officers charged Rangal with the following:

-Vehicular Eluding - Class 5 Felony

-Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft - Class 5 Felony

-Reckless Endangerment - Class 3 Misdemeanor

-Reckless Driving - Class 2 Misdemeanor

-Five Traffic Infractions

The charges are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty.

LJPD reports that there were no suspects, officers, or bystanders injured during this incident.
