The Arkansas Valley will have a treat this Sunday at 2 pm in the Ed Stafford Theater from a musical family performing the third concert of the Community Concert season. The Luther Mason Trio will play a bluegrass and Celtic program with a few classical pieces on their violins, viola and cello. Brother and sister Chris and Cosima Luther grew up in Denver playing violin while David Mason was mastering the cello in Los Angeles.

Chris’ performing career began at the age of eight when he played the fiddle at the Colorado Renaissance Fair near Larkspur, Colorado. He hasn’t stopped since. He earned a bachelor’s degree in violin performance and in jazz from Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver, then a Masters in violin performance from the University of Southern California, and finally a doctorate in viola performance from the University of Texas. He taught at the University of Northern Colorado and teaches now at Colorado Christian University. Dr. Luther is the Owner and President of Luther Strings, a full-service violin shop in Denver.  He has collaborated with Burt Bacharach, Stevie Wonder, and many others, including a performance on the Jay Leno Show with Sara Bareilles.

Meanwhile, his sister Cosima earned her bachelor’s degree in violin performance at Pepperdine University and her Masters in violin performance from the University of Southern California. She is adjunct Professor of Violin at Pepperdine University, and teaches at their summer chamber music program in Heidelberg, Germany. She is working towards a diploma in orchestral conducting at the University of Denver. She is the assistant conductor of the Lamont Symphony Orchestra and associate conductor of the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra.

Cosima is a violin instructor for the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA), She accompanied her YOLA students to Super Bowl 50 where they performed live during the halftime show. She has performed all over Europe and Asia. Cosima, along with her father and brother, co-founded and co-directs Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp in Colorado, a summer festival of string instrument classes and concerts that will celebrate its 25th annual season this July.

Cosima married David Mason, originally from Los Angeles and now a Denver-based freelance cellist. He studied cello performance at California Lutheran University and California Institute of Arts. David has collaborated with many composers in the film, experimental, and pop music industries. He has recorded at Capitol Records and has performed in Carnegie Hall and Ball Arena. He is currently principal cellist of the Pueblo Symphony and is former principal cellist of the Denver Philharmonic. He can be seen on television series Hells Kitchen, The Amazing Race, and Millionaire Matchmaker.

David is a strong advocate for music education. He teaches at Ventura College’s Schwab Academy of Music, and at Luther Strings’ Chamber Academy Summer Intensive. He also founded the Denver Cello Choir, which had its debut concert in June of 2022.
