Obituary

Miles Norman Clark, 71, longtime resident of Crowley County, passed away Friday, December 8, at Parkview Medical Center surrounded by his wife and children. Miles was born on November 17, 1952, in Yuma, Colorado to Norman and Shirley (Josh) Clark.

Miles graduated from Yuma High School in 1971 where he was a member of the honor choir, art club, and Spanish club. His high school athletics included track and baseball. Following high school Miles earned his associate degree in applied science from Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado. He then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, where he majored in Vocational Agriculture. Miles didn’t have time for clubs or other organizations in college, as he spent his time doing work study. He also continued to work at Northside Machine Shop in Yuma during summer months and part-time while he attended school. He worked there with many of his other family members including his grandfather. This is where he learned one of his amazing skills, welding. One that he would go on to share with many.

During his stay at Northeastern Junior College, he met the love of his life Sandra Jo Baker. After completing college, a job teaching Vocational Agriculture became available at Crowley County High School, which brought them to Ordway, Colorado in 1977. It was there they started a family. Miles taught Ag for 15 years, where he served as the Chapter FFA Advisor, State FFA Advisor for State Executive Officers, and as Advisor for the FFA Fairs and Shows Committee. Miles spent the summers of his teaching career doing Custom Wheat Harvest for Mack Farm and Equipment in Cope, Colorado with his brother-in-law Mel Mack.

After resigning from teaching in 1992, Miles accepted a job with the Crowley County Sheriff’s Office. He worked there as a Reserve Officer, Deputy Sheriff, Patrol Sergeant, Undersheriff, and as Crowley County Sheriff for 9 1/2 years. In total he was commissioned with the Crowley County Sheriff’s Office for over 31 years. Miles finished his career at the Pipeyard in Rocky Ford, Colorado and finally retired in 2021.

As if working these jobs wasn’t enough, Miles also found time to serve his community as an EMT for the Crowley County Ambulance Service for 20 years. He served as a volunteer fireman for 31 years with the Crowley County/Ordway Volunteer Fire Department as well. On top of that, Miles was a master instructor for the Colorado Division of Wildlife and taught hunter education classes for 30 years and was also a member of the Ordway United Methodist Church.

Miles was very proud of the 40 years he spent with the Boy Scouts of America. He earned his Eagle Scout and later received the national “Vigil Honor '' awarded by the Tupwee Lodge of the Order of the Arrow, both affiliated with the Rocky Mountain Council of Boy Scouts. He was also selected as a recipient of the “Silver Beaver'' award for his years of distinguished service with the youth. He enjoyed many camping trips both as a young boy and as an assistant Scoutmaster, and there was absolutely nothing he couldn’t cook on a camp stove.

When Miles wasn’t working, he was a devoted family man and enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. Most of this time was spent camping, fishing and hunting, or gathered around the table to enjoy his delicious cooking. There wasn’t a project he couldn’t help with, and he was always prepared for anything. If you ever forgot something on a trip, and Miles was there, you needn't worry because he would have it and more. He influenced all he knew.

Miles is survived by his wife Sandy Clark of 48 years; children, Norman (Stephanie) Clark of Ordway CO; Lindsay (Andy) Walter of Olney Springs, CO; and Shane (Kati) Clark of Pueblo West, CO; His 11 grandchildren, Lane (Emily) Walter; Avery Walter; Ainsley Walter; Sage Clark; Miles Clark; Alexis Clark; Jaden Harris; Triniti Harris; Brayson Hochevar; Haylee Clark; and Garett Clark; 3 great grandchildren, Everleigh Harris; Easton Harris and Elsie Walter; twin sister, Mary Yenter of Eckley, CO; brother, Tim (Linda) Clark of Yuma as well as numerous nephews & nieces. Miles is preceded in death by his parents, Norman “Shotgun” & Shirley Clark; sister, Shelly Clark; and brother, Michael Clark.

Memorial service will be held Saturday, December 16, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Ordway United Methodist Church in Ordway, CO with Pastor Keith Hudiburgh officiating. Concluding services will be at Valley View Cemetery in Ordway.
