Obituary

Jeffery William Black, Jr., 95, passed away December 13, 2023 in Fowler. He was born October 16, 1928 to Jeffery, Sr. and Sara (Brunia) Black in Eureka, CA where his family went to get what was called a grub stake. The family returned to the Fowler area where he spent the rest of his life. He attended school in Fowler and at the White Rock School on Highway 10. In 1942 his parents moved to Fowler where he attended Fowler High School. After high school he spent 2 years at Ft. Lewis A & M.

Jeff married Illene Smith on May 19, 1954 and they spent the first half of their life together working and operating the ranch homesteaded by his 3 aunts in 1916.
He was a very strong member of the White Rock community where he helped with the trail rides in the Apishapa Canyon and in keeping the school house as a community building. He will be remembered for his stories about the history of the area.

Besides ranching he worked as a weigh master at the Winter Livestock Auction Barn for many years. Also worked at the Fowler Auction Barn.
Jeff was a member of the Odd Fellows Hall in Fowler and a big supporter of 4H and FFA. He was always there lending a hand. He could also be found making coffee in an old pot over an open fire at the Cowboy Reunion west of Fowler.

He spent his retirement years welding horseshoe art. Making anything from a candle holder, horseshoe planter, crosses to a Christmas tree. You can see his art in yards around the area. He was a very easy going man and loved by many. He will be missed by family and friends.

Jeff is survived by his 3 children: Bill (Teresa) Black of Plush, OR, Tim (Debora) Black of Alamosa, Lynette (Dennis) Salzbrenner of Sugar City, 2 grandchildren: Seth (Cheryl) Salzbrenner, Montanna Black, 2 step-grandchildren: Jared (Jenny) Gabbel, Jaclyn (Bryan) Hurst, 2 great-grandchildren: Cooper Salzbrenner, Calvert Salzbrenner, 2 step-great- grandchildren: Jacob Gabbel, Justus Gabbel.
