Obituary

Gary Ward Shane, 83, of La Junta, CO, passed away at Bent County Health Care Center in Las Animas on February 11, 2024. Gary was born on Oct. 23, 1940 to Arthur Ward & Margaret (Hamm) Shane. He was married to Sharon Courkamp on Sept. 8, 1963.

Gary farmed, Shane Farms, for over 32 years with his motto “Helping Nature Produce”. He graduated from La Junta High School, Class of 1959. Gary loved drag racing; funny cars and dragsters. He also had a passion for working on motors. He got his pilots license when he was in his 60’s which helped with his adventurist spirit and love for traveling.

Gary is survived by his wife, Sharon of the La Junta home; daughters, Janelle (Jeff) Stedman of Longmont, CO, Jennifer Shane of La Junta, CO, and Dana Smith of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, AJ (Adena) Stedman, Patrick (Taylor) Stedman, Mason Swenor and Logan Swenor; great-granddaughters, Elnora & Maeven Stedman; sister, Connie Shane, and special family friend, Ernestine Gonzales. He was preceded in death by his father Arthur Shane and his mother Mickey (Alex) Dorsch.

A celebration of Gary’s life will be Saturday, March 9, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Valley Community Church with Randall Roberson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Gary’s name to Sangre de Cristo Hospice (Sangre de Cristo Community Care - Southern Colorado's Leader in Hospice Care) or to Valley Community Church, 27435 County Road 22 75, Rocky Ford, CO, 81067, direct or through the funeral home.
