Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joe Frausto, a cherished community volunteer, devoted father, and extraordinary man whose kindness and wisdom touched the lives of many. He leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and selflessness. On Tuesday, April 2, 2024, Joseph John Frausto, passed away at the age of 64.

He was born November 27, 1959, in Las Animas, Colorado, to Francisco and Fedelina Frausto. He attended St. Mary’s School, Las Animas Junior High School, and graduated as a proud Trojan from Las Animas High School in 1978. He entered the Army and served honorably for 4 years. Joseph returned to the area and attended Otero Junior College, then Adams State College to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Earth Science and a teaching certificate. He met Sarah Turner, and they were married June 27, 1987. They returned to Las Animas to establish their home. He earned a Master of Arts degree in Special Education. Mr. Frausto taught in Cheraw and enjoyed coaching football. After welcoming two sons in 1993 and 1994, he started teaching in Las Animas, where he also coached football and wrestling. He developed wonderful friendships with colleagues and molded the young minds of many students over his 20-year career in education. Fatherhood was a joy beyond measure to him! Joe and Sarah welcomed two daughters in 2003 and 2005.

Joe was deeply involved in various community initiatives where his unwavering dedication and boundless enthusiasm quickly earned him the admiration and respect of all who knew him.

After many years of volunteering at Bent’s Old Fort, he was offered a job as historical reenactor where he embodied Jose Juan Frausto del rio de las ánimas perdidas en purgatorio. He was paid to be a Mexican. Whether he was in costume at Bent’s Old Fort, working at Boggsville Historic Site, greeting visitors at the John W. Rawlings Heritage Center and Museum, volunteering with the Division of Wildlife, helping with Boy Scouts, serving with Clean Valley Recycling, lending a hand to those in need, contributing to community improvement projects, and simply offering a listening ear and a comforting smile, he touched countless lives and inspired others.

Some of his hobbies were reading, fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, leatherwork, blacksmithing, and knife making. One of his other great pleasures was treasure hunting at yard sales and second hand stores of all kinds.

Joe was proud to have been born and raised in Las Animas. Beyond his remarkable contributions to the community, Joe was also a loving and devoted husband of 36 years to Sarah and father to his four children Eli, Lucas, Phoebe, and Cora. He cherished his role in the family. As a parent he poured his heart and soul into nurturing his children, instilling in them the values of kindness, integrity, and perseverance. As a brother he has always been there for his sister, Frances (Lynn) Brundage, brother Frank Frausto, other brother James (Susette) Frausto whether it was to lend an ear, share a meal, a drink or a story. He is the calm in our lives.

Joe was preceded in death by his father, Frank, and mother, Fedelina. He is survived by his wife, four children, three siblings and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

There will be a Celebration of Life on Friday, April 12, 2024, 6 p.m. at Boggsville.
