MUSEUM HOSTS FLINN EXHIBIT OLD FASHIONED TEA

By Kathleen Tomlin

July 11, 20021

The Museum hosted an Old-Fashioned Tea for the community to highlight the John Flinn Summer Exhibit on Sunday afternoon.

Many ladies were sashing around in hats and old-fashioned dresses – what a beautiful site!  About 40 people attended, including the Flinn family; guest speaker Ken Brandon; BHS members and friends.

The Bent County Art Guild served delicious refreshments with strawberry and mint julip iced tea.

Kathleen introduced Joan Flinn Martine daughter of John, who then introduced her family; an unexpected family member, Loyanne Flinn from California; and special guest, Ken Brandon from Salida.  Kathleen extended a special thanks to volunteers Alice Deatherage, Pauline Cardenas, and Phyllis Lutz, who worked hard to help us set up the exhibit.

Rob Moorehead, employee, was also appreciated for his contributions to make the exhibit and events successful.  Linda Bourne loaned a framed picture of her sister, Patricia Harman Bach, to demonstrate portraits that John did.

Ginny Cooper Grimstead brought a rare, “Space in The Sun,” piece that was conscripted by Governor Love as a gift from Colorado and is on display in New York City’s Museum of Modern Art.

Ken talked about working with John Flinn for six years and was with him when the portrait was done.  He said they worked in a cold cinder block building on 5th Street across from the Fire Station.

Ken has a similar business in Salida and has for many years.  Ken said when John was around, he was a people magnet, and told many interesting stories.

Everyone attending received a door prize and we thank our sponsors - Mondays; Dairy Queen, Val-U-Med Health Mart; Lynette Wolf; and Marietta Adams.

Joan expressed grateful thanks from the Flinn family for making this exhibit possible and she loved all the stories she heard about her Dad.  The exhibit will continue through Labor Day Weekend.  Don’t miss it!
