DIA DE LOS MUERTOS ART SHOW & CELEBRATION

By: Lynette Wolfe & Kathleen Tomlin

The John W. Rawlings Heritage Center & Museum hosted the Dia De Los Muertos Arts Show (Day of the Dead/All Souls Day) on October 30, 2021. Art Show entries came from Las Animas elementary students and artists across Southeast Colorado.

La Junta resident Artist Stacey Ayala and Las Animas High School senior Sarah Van Vleet won the “People’s Choice Award” for their outstanding art.

The Las Animas 5th grade class showed their artistic abilities with their sugar skull art and stories. Overall, the Art Show was a huge success with over 60 Art entries and around 50 people visiting the art show. Kids activities included face painting, storytelling, and cookie decorating. Snacks and hot cider were provided by Mauritta Adams and the Bent County Art Guild.

Downtown Las Animas was transformed into a Dia De Los Muertos themed Car Show. The event was a smashing success with 38 registered cars and was well attended by the community. Car show volunteers Andrew Brassfield and Councilman Terry Kim worked hard with amazing results. This was the first annual car show, but you wouldn't know it with how smoothly it ran.

There was one grand prize winner, and every participant received a gift bag full of donations from businesses throughout the Valley.

The Bent County Sheriff’s Office brought out the climbing wall and the Colorado Parks and Wildlife donated fishing poles to all the kids at the event. The Arkansas Valley Farmers & Artisan Market vendors set up and there were food trucks and food vendors available. This was a free event for cars, bikes, vendors, and attendees. This turned out to be a great event with beautiful fall weather, volunteers, and the community participation.

The Dia De Los Muertos Car Show and Art Show in Las Animas was brought to the community by the Tourism, Arts and Cultural Development committee (TAC). This committee’s purpose is planning and implementation of strategies to leverage our communities’ unique cultural assets to promote tourism.

By cultivating indigenous arts and culture, communities are benefactors of wider travel audiences. Building creative economy requires building a creative community. The TAC committee was started by Councilwoman Cassandra Siefkas and newly elected Councilwoman, Lynette Wolfe.

The TAC committee has more events in the works, including plans to bring three annual music festivals to Las Animas; expanding next year’s Dia De Los Muertos events, and sponsoring more art and craft shows.

The TAC committee meets every second Friday of the month at 5:00pm at City Hall. These meetings are open to the community and members and volunteers are needed.
