The Buffalo Soldies' Role in The American West

A Free Lecture about the Buffalo Soldiers' role in the opening of the American West is offered Saturday, July 13, at 1:00 in Rocky Ford's Grand Theatre.  The featured speaker is Dennis Moore of Colorado Springs.

This is a regular meeting of the Bent's Fort Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association, held annually at the Rocky Ford theatre, located at 405 South Main St.  Programs at these meetings are popular events.

Moore is a founding member of the Buffalo Soldiers Memorial Committee in Colorado Springs, which is dedicated to the preservation and commemoration of the role the Buffalo Soldiers played in Colorado's Ninth US Cavalry, which served at the Fort Lyon Cavalry Post. He has provided over 50 Buffalo Soldier presentations during the last 10 years.

During the period of the Indian Wars, the Buffalo Soldiers fought against the Cheyyenne, Apache, Kiowa, Ute, Comanche, and Lakota Native American Tribes.  Other duties included patrolling the borders, protecting transportation routes, pursuing outlaws, installing telegraph lines, and delivering the mail.

Stories of these African-American troops, active during and especially after the Civil War, are now being  more frequently told.

This Saturday's gathering is an opportunity for the public to learn more about a less well known chapter of Wild West history.
